The Black Caps have come a long way from their underdog status in world cricket a decade back to emerge as one of the most consistent and fittest teams around in World Cricket. New Zealand cricket, so often in the large shadows of Rugby has finally managed to make a stand and they are making a strong impact in virtually every large competition they participate in.
The Black Caps first shot at limelight was the 1992 World Cup, where New Zealand led by Captain fantastic Martin Crowe shocked big teams and went on to the semi-finals with limited resources. Since then, they haven't looked back and have played some competitive forceful cricket which has won them admirers all over the world. The New Zealand charge then was led by fine players such as Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Craig McMillan and Stephen Fleming. The present New Zealand team under the able guidance of Daniel Vettori who took over Stephen Fleming this summer is all set to embark on a new journey to glory despite the retirement of legends such as Craig McMillan and Nathan Astle .In Shane Bond and Mark Gillespie they have a formidable pace attack which when fit, can give most batting line ups a tough time. The pace attack is ably supported by the guile of left arm spinner Daniel Vettori who has firmly established himself as the finest finger spinner in the world at the moment. The 28 year old has been a veteran servant for the New Zealand cricket team and his ability to take wickets at crucial junctions coupled with his more than useful batting late down the order has made him one of the most versatile and valuable cricketers in the world. On the other hand, New Zealand batting has suffered a dent over the recent year or so with the retirement of Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan. However in Lou Vincent and Jamie How, they posses batsmen of high technical ability and skill and much will be expected for these two players over the years to come. The real strength of the Kiwis however lies in their late order batting which has given them an edge over so many teams in recent one day matches. All rounders Scott Styris and Jacob Oram can both hit the ball a long way and their tidy efficient bowling in the middle overs gives New Zealand a real advantage in one day internationals over other teams as proved in World Cup 2007 and the ICC 20-20 championship where they reached the semifinals
